I want to buy a DC with manual control, possibly also wide angle, and optical image stabiliser... Not DSLR, they're too huge... I want to carry it around...
And there's only ONE choice, but people say Panasonic is bad... with a lot of noise... Canon is much better, I've got one Canon DC, it's quite good.
In this day and age, what're the camera companies thinking?? I'm not like requesting very special features... how come there're so few choices out there??
Now it's down to Panasonic LX2, Canon G7 (no wide angle), Canon S80 (no optical image stabiliser), Canon A640 (no wide angle, no OIS, but an adjustable LCD and real CHEAP!)
hmm... still thinking...

personally i'd be torn between the S80 and G7... the S80 has got wide angle and is smaller than the G7... however S80 is already quite 'old' whereas G7 is new.
i wouldn't go for the A640 because it's not made in japan.
what a coincidence
i was just thinking about switching from my film camera to a digital camera today too, though have not started looking around yet.
will look at your posts as reference ar, hehee.
the good thing about old cameras, they're CHEAP!! haha!!
G7 costs almost $5000... if it has 28mm, then I think it's not very expensive, now if I want 28mm, I'll need to buy wide lens and add an extra of $1000...
the good thing about A640 is that it uses AA battery, it'll be easy and cheap to replace batteries while I'm on a trip
I'd have chosen LX2 if only the wide angle thing is not limited to 16:9...
do you think image stabliser is useful?
I don't care about the difference in resolution, I'm not going to print posters... DIGIC II & II are both ok for me
the only difference that matters to me is the image stabliser... wonder if it's really that useful tho...
There's just one camera left for S80, I didn't like the LCD much... hmm... but it costs $2690, if I buy LX2 (water goods) it's around $3000
if I buy LX2 in Broadway, it's 4290, with 1GB SD card, and other stuff
for G7, it's 4880 (or similar, can't remember the exact price) and a 2GB card...
hmm... still thinking
well... in my humble opinion (as a complete photography dummy):
i'd prefer canon over panasonic
S80 is smaller than the G7... and portability is a major priority for me coz the last thing i'd want is neck/shoulder/back sprain from carrying tonnes of stuff around whilst travelling (and is that wide lens for the G7 chunky at all?)
and the S80 is what, $3000 cheaper than the G7? being a non-photographer myself, i'd rather splurge the $3000 on something else
i dunno anything about that image stabiliser wor... probably you just have to breath-hold and press the shutter with minimal force to minimize shaking in order to compensate???
I'd prefer Canon over Panasonic... hmm... S80 is HK$2000 cheaper than G7, with no extra gifts tho, whereas you get battery and card for Panasonic, just card for G7...
I don't bring the tripod out, and my hands are shaky... it's especially bad when I ask OTHER people to take photos for me, it seems like most ppl just don't know how to hold a camera still... I got tons of pic with a blurred me in it... =P
one more thing I find that I like about Panasonic... in fact just found out half an hour ago while looking thru sample pics, it's good at the color purple. One thing I hated about my Canon camera, it showed all my purple clothes as blue!!! And I have tons of purple stuff, coz I LOVE purple...
I'm not good in camera stuff myself, I just wanted to try and learn more. I don't think you're a dummy tho, especially for a girl, you know quite a lot. Most girls don't know anything about camera...
A friend of mine can get LX2 at a very low price for me... together with the purple color capture...
LX2 is getting more attractive...
hmm... still everyone says Panasonic DCs are bad...
